Maternity services in north east London


North East London (NEL) works across seven boroughs – City and Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge and Havering.

Within these boroughs we have five hospitals offering maternity services. 

North east London maternity units deliver approximately 27,000 babies per year.

Providing care with options to birth at home, in the Lotus Birth Centre, the Barkantine Birth Centre or the delivery suite.

With a Neonatal Unit ‘level 3’ they care for babies with the highest need for support.

The latest CQC inspection reported the Maternity Unit to be overall rated as ‘Good’.

Providing care with options to birth at home, in the Barking Community Hospital or the Delivery suite.

With a Neonatal Unit ‘level 2’ they care for babies who need a higher level of medical and nursing support.

The latest CQC inspection reported the Maternity Unit to be overall rated as ‘Requires improvement’

With a Neonatal Unit ‘level 1’ they care for babies who need extra support but do not need intensive care.
