A new chair has been announced by north east London’s emerging integrated care system (ICS).
Marie Gabriel CBE will play a key role leading the ICS which covers City and Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge.
Her appointment was confirmed today by NHS London Regional Director, Sir David Sloman,
To ensure independence in her new role, Marie will be stepping down as Chair of East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) – a post she has held since October 2012.
Her appointment was welcomed by Jane Milligan, Senior Responsible Officer for North East London Sustainability and Transformation Partnership – also known as East London Health and Care Partnership – and Accountable Officer for NHS North East London Commissioning Alliance.
She said: “We’re delighted to welcome Marie to this pivotal role. This is a great appointment for us as Marie has a wealth of local knowledge and experience in health and care across north east London.
“Marie will help us drive forward the development of our integrated care system and play an integral role in leading greater partnership working between the NHS, local authorities and the wider system.”
Prior to joining ELFT, Marie was Chair of NHS Newham, East London and the City, and North East London and the City. She has also held the position of Vice Chair of Newham University Hospital Trust and Chair of Newham Community Health Council.
A north east London resident, her contribution to the local area was recognised in 2010 when she was awarded Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Newham and she was also included in the health service’s inaugural ‘Inspirational Women’ list in 2012.
She is currently a member of the NHS Employers Policy Board, NHS Confederation’s Mental Health Network and the NHS People Plan Advisory Group, and holds trustee positions at Foundation for Future London, East London Business Alliance and the West Ham United Community Foundation. She was recently made a CBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours.
Marie (pictured) said: “As sad as I am to be stepping down as chair of ELFT, I’m also incredibly excited to be taking up this new role. It affords me the opportunity to work with communities across north east London to transform services and improve outcomes, and to widen my work with truly dedicated and talented colleagues, of whom ELFT will remain part.”
Marie is one of five independent chairs appointed today to lead London’s emerging ICSs.
Together, they will take on responsibility for the future of the city’s health and care systems which serve the nine million people living in the capital.
Sir David Sloman said: “It’s not just the NHS that helps to care for us and keep us well. Councils, charities and community groups also play a vital role in keeping Londoners healthy.
“These five outstanding leaders will help improve care for all Londoners by organising health and social care services that work best for patients – regardless of organisational boundaries.
